I’ve been building for over 30 years, but I still clearly remember something the foreman said to me on my first day. . . “The reason I’m a builder, is I can stand back at the end of the job, and have the satisfaction of admiring my own achievement”.
I have always felt that same way, and have also enjoyed being able to share my skills with my clients, building them a quality home that will last for generations. When I build a home and put my name on it, it’s because I would be happy to live there and pass it on to my own children and grandchildren, just like I expect my clients will.
My grandfather was a builder who inspired me from an early age. As a wee lad, born and raised on Auckland’s North Shore. Part of my childhood was spent on Lake Pupuke, Milford and Mairangi Bay. At 16, I started my building career with ‘Campbell Construction Ltd’ and served a 4 year building apprenticeship.
From there I gained valuable experience building on Australia’s Gold Coast. I moved back home to Auckland, where I contracted for other builders, including Mike Wrightson of Wrightson Construction Ltd.

Back home in New Zealand
In 2003 I moved to Christchurch and started Waddell and Currie Builders Ltd, with Peter Currie. Everything we’ve learned and created together has been of particular pride to me, especially the help we gave in rebuilding Christchurch after the earthquakes.
It’s no small coincidence that we are still standing strong after the collapse of the construction industry in the mid 2010’s. It’s one thing to build a home, and another thing entirely to run a solid and successful company, although if you ask me they are very similar things: make triple sure the foundation is strong, spend time researching and checking your plans and products, never, ever skimp on quality, make sure you and your client fully understand each other, employ the best and treat them like the best, and stay organised.
After multiple successes, it’s time for a new course. Ferg Waddell Homes will allow me to fully and completely expand my creative building knowledge, and give me the freedom to pursue positive industry connections that will ultimately benefit my clients.
